The Time Has Come for Downtown Racine’s 2010 Public Art Project
Downtown Racine will be in prime time this summer as we display 60 tremendous timepieces. Racine’s 9th annual public art event, “Hour Town”, will feature 28” clocks which will be displayed on sidewalks and in storefronts throughout Downtown Racine from Memorial Day through Labor Day weekend.
The Downtown Racine Corporation initiated their first public art project in 2002 with “Dog Days of Summer”. Since then, the public art projects have featured cats, bears, fish, otters, birds, birdbaths, lighthouses, spheres and a variety of Adirondack chairs. Racine is the only city in the nation that has sponsored public art for this number of consecutive years.
The Clocks
The fiberglass clocks are 28” in diameter and weigh approximately 8 pounds each. There is housing for the clock mechanism on the back of each clock and the face of the clock is concave.
The clocks are being created locally by Fiber-Tech, a Racine area manufacturer who fabricates custom molded composite components and assemblies for diverse OEM markets. This is the same company that produced the sphere art piece for Downtown’s 2008 public art project.
A Fantastic Art Project Needs a Fantastic Name
Members of the community joined in and submitted more than 1,165 entries (an all-time high) as the name for this year’s event. The title needed to convey a sense of fun, entice visitors to come Downtown to see the clocks and promote Downtown Racine as a fun and exciting place to be.
The winning name, Hour Town, is a unique, crisp slogan that will generate interest and invoke feelings of fun for the whole family. Hour Town was submitted by two separate individuals – Sherri Myers Wray and Don Schmidt – who each received a $50 Downtown gift certificate.
Any Time’s a Great Time in Downtown Racine
The clocks will help us celebrate summertime in Downtown Racine. These artfully decorated clocks will provide an excellent opportunity to showcase Downtown’s shops, galleries, museums, restaurants and our beautiful lakefront by attracting thousands of visitors to the area.
Talented artists from around the state are busy creating their clocks which are set to be completed by mid-May. Planned designs include floral, mosaic, tin and metal designs, as well as themes that span the entire scope of whimsical and sophisticated art.
On Saturday, May 22, it will be time to view the happy hours during a special preview Clocktail Party which will be held at The Johnson Foundation at Wingspread. The evening at Club “Wingspread” will include a Tony Bennett Buffet, Dean’s Dreamin’ Clocktails, Sammy’s Silent Auction, a “Frank” Tour through Wingspread and live entertainment. The cost to attend the party is $125 per person.
And, just in time for summertime, the clocks will be on display by Memorial Day.

Racine, WI, March 10, 2010–-“Hour Town” has been chosen by the Downtown Racine Corporation as the name for its 2010 Public Art Event which will feature 28” decorated wall clocks.
Over 1,165 entries (an all time high) were submitted in the Name the Event Contest. The winning name was submitted by two separate individuals – Sherri Myers Wray and Don Schmidt who are both from Racine. Sherri and Don will each receive a $50 Downtown gift certificate.
The DRC staff stated that it was exciting to see the interest this contest generated. Not everyone can participate by being an artist, but everyone can have a creative moment. Choosing the final name was a very difficult decision. “Hour Town” is a unique, crisp slogan that could generate interest and invoke feelings of fun for the family. The DRC wishes to thank everyone who participated in the contest for their wonderful and creative ideas and suggestions.
Sherri Myers Wray, with the help of her friend Jude Poplawski, also designed a logo to go along with her “Hour Town” suggestion. The logo will be used on all marketing materials for this year’s public art event.
“It is only a matter of time before we will be using many of the slogan suggestions,” said Terry Leopold, DRC’s Special Events Coordinator. "The clock is ticking and we are in the process of artist proposal selections. When summertime rolls around, Downtown Racine will be treated to the art of time. If this contest was any indication, "Hour Town" has proved that Racine has time to make a difference".
