The Big Chill Postponed Due to Unseasonably Warm Weather; Racine's Ice and Snow Festival Rescheduled for January 20-22
Racine, WI, January 9, 2012 -- The Downtown Racine Corporation has announced the The Big Chill is being postponed for one week. The event will now be held the weekend of January 20-22.
"Due to the unseasonably warm weather, we are unable to produce enough snow to have a successful event," said Devin Sutherland, Executive Director of the Downtown Racine Corporation. "Temperatures are expected to drop later this week, at which time we will begin making snow for next weekend's snow sculpting."
The Big Chill is Wisconsin's 22 Annual State Snow Sculpting Competition which is being held in Racine for the first time (this event was previously held in Wisconsin Dells as the Flake Out Festival). The event will bring the state's best 2-person snow sculpting teams to Downtown Racine's Monument Square where they will compete for cash prizes as well as the title of Wisconsin Snow Sculpting Champion. The winning team will then advance to the U.S. National Competition held in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin in February of 2013.
In addition to snow sculpting, The Big Chill will also feature local and regional ice carvers who will sculpt imaginative creations out of 300 pound blocks of ice along Main and 6th Streets.
All other activities planned in conjunction with The Big Chill will also be moved to the weekend of January 20-22.
Visitors are encouraged to come to Downtown Racine throughout the weekend and cast their votes for their favorite snow and ice sculptures. The People's Choice votes will help to determine the winners which will be announced Sunday afternoon at Monument Square.
