Above is a photo of a sample canvas, created by artists and photographers Brad Jaeck and Carol Hansen of Photographic Design Gallery and Framing. The medium used in this sample is photography that was adhered to the artist tile to create their one-of-a-kind canvas creation.
The public art project is a wonderful interactive event for the entire community. Now in its 13th year, this exciting summer long project once again highlights Downtown Racine's commitment to the visual arts and aspiring local artists.

Over 400 artists are being asked to participate in this exciting project. This year's project begins with an 8" x 8" blank canvas textured art board. Artists of all ages, from Racine County and all over the country, are being asked to create a one-of-a-kind canvas creation using any technique and medium. Using an array of mediums and techniques such as photography, needle point, painting, mosaics, chalk, typography, decoupage and or color pencil sketches artists will transform the 400 "blank canvases" into uniquely brilliant masterpieces

Once the canvases are completed and turned into the Downtown Racine Corporation in early May, they will be arranged into lively groupings. These groupings will be displayed in Downtown establishments during the summer months for the community and visitors to enjoy.

In addition to 400 artists participating in this public art event, the community is asked to participate in the following ways:

First, the public will be asked to participate in a "naming contest" to share their creative name choices for this art campaign. Campaign names entries are due by Monday, February 24th and can be mailed to Downtown Racine Corporation, 425 Main Street, Racine, Wisconsin 53403 or e-mailed to tleopold@racinedowntown.com. Please be sure to include your name, address and phone number. The winning name will be announced in mid-March and the winner will receive a $50 Downtown Racine gift certificate.

Lastly, the DRC hopes to get the public's feedback by having the public vote for their favorite canvases throughout the summer. The DRC will offer a People's Choice Award of $100 each to the top 20 artists with the most votes. * Lastly, the public will be invited to purchase raffle tickets in anticipation of owning a one-of-a-kind canvas creation. Proceeds from the raffle will be reinvested into the quality services and energetic events the DRC provides to the Downtown area and community.
